Musculoskeletal Pain – What Is It?

Musculoskeletal pain refers to pain felt in your bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or nerves. It can be localized in on area of your body or widespread, and can be acute (sudden onset of severe symptoms) or chronic (long-lasting). Common forms of musculoskeletal pain are lower back pain, tendonitis, stress fractures, and muscle pain (myalgia).

Types of Musculoskeletal Pain

  • Bone pain: usually a deep, dull ache
  • Muscle pain: similar to bone pain, can include spasms and cramps
  • Tendon and ligament pain: often noticed when the affected area is stretched
  • Fibromyalgia: a condition that can cause pain in muscles, joints, and ligaments, often felt in multiple areas at once
  • Joint pain: usually a stiff, aching pain, sometimes accompanied by swelling
  • Tunnel syndromes (cubital, radial, carpal, and tarsal): usually pain, numbness, and/or tingling in the affected area

Causes

Musculoskeletal pain is often caused by injuries often resulting from overuse. Lower back pain is a common work-related injury, as well as prolonged periods of inactivity and poor posture.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of musculoskeletal pain include:

  • Pain that worsens with movements (can be widespread or acute)
  • Aching or stiffness
  • Muscles that feel pulled or strained
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle twitching
  • “Burning” sensation in the muscles
  • Disturbed sleep

The symptoms you experience will vary depending upon the type of injury or pain, so you should consult a physician for a full diagnosis.

Diagnosing Musculoskeletal Pain

Physicians require a thorough medical history to determine any possible causes behind musculoskeletal pain, such as injuries incurred at work or while playing sports. They will then conduct an examination to discern the source(s) of the pain. Further testing may be required, often in the form of laboratory tests and/or x-rays.

Treatment

Given the variety of potential causes behind musculoskeletal pain, treatment will depend upon the type of injury. Treatments often include:

  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Use of a splint
  • Applying heat or cold to the affected area(s)
  • NSAIDs
  • Increased rest
  • Stress reduction
  • Anti-inflammatory or anesthetic injections in or around the affected area(s)
  • Strengthening and conditioning exercises
  • Stretching exercises
  • Massage, chiropractic help, or acupuncture
